There are some great, easily accessible woodland walks all over the island – Bridgend; Ballygrant; Loch Gruinart RSPB reserve; Cairnmore Woods by Kilnaughton (info in the Islay Walks leaflets). The best time to appreciate Islay’s woodlands is from January to June for the wild flowers; March to July for bird song; May to June for spring fungi and October for autumn fungi.
Beachcombing is great any time of year; it can be particularly interesting after autumn storms which can throw up some unusual creatures on the exposed beaches to the west.
